Batch rename of raw files loses track...

When I try to use batch rename (Bridge/CS4) to rename multiple raw files (where I have already input lots of metadata descriptions and keywords), some (but not all) of the renamed files appear to ''lose'' all of their metadata. After re-creating the metadata by hand several times, I finally realized that Bridge had failed to rename the xml file (and I could just use windows explorer to manually rename the xml file to match the new raw file name), and the metadata would reappear.

This defeats the convenience of batch renaming - has anyone found a way to avoid or prevent this problem? For now, I am just doing all my renaming before putting in data and keywords, but that is not a convenient workflow. Bridge/CS3 did not have this problem.

Thanks for any insight on this.

This problem is not uncommon, but not the ''norm''. Check in metadata preferences/file propteries and make sure you have a check mark for ''supports xml''.?For some that has worked.

Report back if that solves the problem or not so others can benefit.

I made that change (checkbox for ''supports xmp'') and have not had the problem again. Thanks.

Am not sure if that is a final fix, as it was an intermittent problem, but I am hopeful.

One other point.?Avoid moving or renaming files with attached xmp files outside of Bridge.?They may not move with file.?That could be cause of the ''intermittent'' problem, as it is difficult to keep track of which one you changed and wihch ones you did not in another browser.
