Why is the Knife Tool grayed out in...

I am working on a button. I placed a copy of the button with a gradient fill directly over the original button. I want to use the Knife Tool to remove 1/2 of the gradient filled copy, but the knife tool is grayed out. I looked around to see if I could locate the configuration file for Fireworks to reset it to default as suggested in an earlier post. However, I have not been able to do it. Can someone please help me with this?

Why is the Knife Tool grayed out in...

I kept looking throughout the forum and trying different solutions previously offered by others. what worked for me was to

click on Menu-Modify-Ungroup.

When I copied and pasted the duplicate of the button and filled it with a gradient, it seems that Fireworks automatically placed the two button layers into a group. I selected the top layer, then I ungrouped the layers. The top layer turns into a path, which makes the Knife Tool selectable. This is not a very intuitive or well documented tool. I hope Adobe provides manuals with ADOBE CS5 and thoroughly documents Fireworks and especially the Knife Tool.
